‘Songs of Christmas’ ~ including full, corresponding instrumental tracks !!

Mark Twain once wrote that a “classic” is “a book which people praise and don't read.” In our modern world, Christmas Carols are classics. We hear them on the radio starting around Halloween; we sing tired and silly versions of them at parties and places of worship. Our pop stars shine up and release instantly forgettable and strangely sexy versions of them each year. But, have we ever really heard these songs? Do have any idea what we’re singing?

For years I’ve wanted to record classic Christmas carols. But with an un-ending mudslide of versions out there, my question was always, “what’s the point?” It wasn’t until a friend of mine encouraged me to view them through Young Oceans’ vaguely ‘eastern’ sounding filter that it clicked for me. What if we abandoned the melody structure altogether? What if we mixed up and re-ordered the lyrics themselves? Was there a way to reverently re-present these sacred pieces of art?

I confess I have never looked deeply into the poetry inside these old songs. I was always too tied to the familiarity of the tune. In order get to the heart of it, those melodies, though cozy and familiar, had to be cut away and cut up, in some cases altogether. What I found was a scaffold of poetry and depth that absolutely floored me. To build these songs back up upon these re-discovered lyrics was a wonderful act of devotion for us. Knowing that there is no ‘beating’ the timeless melodies, we opted for a re-dressing, if for no other reason, than to allow the listener to hear these songs anew once again. We hope you enjoy these new classics; our humble collection, ‘Songs of Christmas’.
